February 7th, 2009Sofa Workshop sold back to founder by administrators
Sofa Workshop, which collapsed into administration just a week ago, has been purchased by a consortium headed by one of its founders.
Part of the bespoke sofa retailer’s business, comprising of 10 stores with turnover of £30m has been sold by the administrators to Erewash Upholstery, run by investors’ consortium. It is led by Andrew Cussins, founder of the Sofa Workshop.
The sale has saved 50 employees from losing jobs, but the remaining 20 stores will have to be closed. The new set up will ensure to fulfil all current orders.
Joint administrator, Neil Bennett, at Leonard Curtis, expressed regret that more jobs could not be saved, but emphasised that new business owners will be ensuring execution of all current orders.
The stores that will be retained include those in Bristol, Bath, Exeter, Kingston, Guildford and Tunbridge Wells. Four stores, Chiswick, Battersea, Tottenham Court Road and Kings’ Road, all from London, are also being retained. Bennett informed that Sofa Workshop’s head office and remaining 20 stores have to be closed immediately, resulting into unavoidable loss of many jobs.
Bennett further elaborated by saying that basic idea of the Workshop was good, but current economic climate crippled its business. People have not been shifting homes nor spending on goods like new home and office furniture, leading to closure of many stores in the last few months.
