December 19th, 2008Primark store delivers biggest one-day sales, beating consumer slowdown
Last Saturday, fashion giant Primark’s London store delivered its biggest one day sale in its 39-year history.
It is reported that Primark’s Oxford Street store sold in excess of £600,000, despite consumer slowdown all over the UK. Sales were boosted by a traffic-free day prior to Christmas and were much ahead of sales in London’s West End last year.
Primark’s flagship London store, owned by Associated British Foods, has been highly successful since its opening in April 2007 and had been generating weekly sales of nearly £2m although trading was less buoyant at other UK stores. High Street’s other retailers Currys, PC World and Marks & Spencer have been witnessing volatile trading as the retail industry is engaged in fierce discounting.
According to the British Retail Consortium, the UK like-for-like retail sales dropped 2.6% in November and total sales were down for two consecutive months for the first time since 1995.
In Europe, Primark succeeded in poaching one more senior executive from fashion retailer C&A who would head its management team in Spain. It has appointed Jose Luis Martinez as General Manager of Iberia to support existing team which has grown 8% of Primark’s total sales in Spain in four years since opening.
Primark’s full-year operating profits were up by 17 per cent to £233m.
