It was another day of gloom for high street retailers with collapse of Waterford, a historic china and crystal maker, threatening loss of 2,700 jobs across the UK and Ireland.
This is the latest failure following closure of 111 stores owned by Adams, the childrenswear chain, where 850 people lost their means of livelihood.
Another retailer to join high street’s list of administration casualties was perfume retailer, Passion for Perfume, based in Manchester. This led to cutting of 194 jobs.
Former high street giant Woolworths closed its doors on the remaining 200 stores in a collapse which has deprived a whopping number of 27,000 staff their means of earning.
Administrator Deloitte is busy hunting for potential buyer for Waterford Wedgwood, known for Waterford crystal, Wedgwood pottery and Royal Doulton.
250 years old Waterford collapsed after negotiations over a possible sale to a private equity firm from US failed and its lenders lost their patience due to inordinate delay.
The company employed around 1,900 manufacturing and retailing staff in the UK while 800 staff had been working in Ireland.
The firm failed in its attempts to restructure business for getting out of crisis despite launching new products and getting modern lines redesigned by availing services of renowned chef Gordon Ramsay and designer Sir Terence Conran.
